7A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

1. Real Fan Talk SportsCasting "Uncensored"

2. Opportunity: A place for fans to watch analysts speak and banter with no filtering as if they are watching themselves argue and talk with their buddies over sports news etc.

3. Hypothesis:
I think everyone was expecting Barstool Sports to become this, and sadly they took a different turn and turned into something far from what they seemed to be the initial target was. I believe people are eager to have something to watch and not only keep updated on the latest sports news and events but to see it from a funny and real perspective. This may not be everyone but I realized that over 75% of social media sports talk with "non-verified" fans include explicit language and is considered explicit bantering.

4. Interviews

First, I interviewed my dad, he loves the idea and said how much he enjoys Bob Menery an explicit Instagram sports broadcaster, he believes it brings out what you say in your head onto the actual broadcast and makes it 100 times more authentic. I asked him if this is something he would keep an HBO subscription for or some sort of channel that can allow this on their platform and he said there was no doubt. Next, I interviewed my brother in law and he believes that although Barstool Sports is something great, they went with the podcast route and have individual podcasts covering a specific sport and sometimes even other non-sport related things, and he pointed out that their "best" podcasts according to charting are not even their sports-related podcats. So he believes maybe they can be partnered into this idea to make it pop even more. Then I interviewed my friends Alex and Zach they both actually believe they could do this job, and they pointed out that's the beauty of it. It levels with how these conversations actually go between fans arguing and discussing these matters, they kid around and get on each others nerve in an unprofessional way; which ultimately will make the viewers feel as if they are watching something they can easily relate to and enjoy watching.

5. I believe I found this to be a great opportunity because it was brought to light in the early days of Barstool Sports and many people including myself are disappointed in the outcome of the company and believe they aren't very sports-oriented anymore and are more of a social media fad.

5A – Identifying Local Opportunities

  • Description: Long Island heads into phase 1 of reopening, this may sound like good news but many believe since it is such little reopening; it is a sham created by governor Cuomo who is hesitant to start moving forward amid the coronavirus and its brutal effects on the greater New York areas. This leaves many small businesses waiting to reopen and try to salvage what they can to continue operating as a business after this is all over, the road ahead for these people is looking tough and grim.

4A – Forming An Opportunity Belief

Starting Point- I believe there could be a sports channel that relates more to how fans banter back and forth about topics and sports news.

Describe Your Belief: This was supposed to be barstool, and I believe they took a turn to something completely different and missed a huge opportunity. I believe that there could be a sort of explicit SportsCenter channel on a cable platform that permits this sort of explicit banter. I would love for this to be done through HBO, just as those funny twisted news shows do on HBO. Just oriented on the sports industry and news.

Identify prototypical customer: The customers would be anybody who is an avid sports fan and enjoys an old fashioned argument with their friends over sports topics and enjoy the authenticity these conversations have including them being aggressive at times and using explicit words.

Iteration #1: I discussed this belief and idea with the prototypical customer and they seemed to be quite interested in it. So much to the fact I showed them a sort of similar Instagram sensation Bob Menery who does this but announcing sports explicitly with no restrictions. They loved it so much they wanted to have me pitch them my idea to see the whole picture, and envision what could be a great success for the realm of sportscast TV.

Iteration #2:  Going on to customer #2. They believe Barstool Sports already had this intention and started to stray due to success doing what they kept doing via social media and podcasting on apple. They believe this idea should be created and pitched to Barstool after everything is secured legally, then have them buy it and take over the operation with having a stake of the entire franchise.

Iteration #3: This customer gave me the same feedback as the first so much they had a few of their own ideas and things that could actually help prepare for this idea to become a reality. The feedback was more than I could have even imagined, very positive, and knowledgable.

Reflection: Through this assignment I found myself having a solid idea that I would love to actually pursue, I love sports and always enjoy fun banter between my friends and me about our respectful opinions on anything sports-related. After hearing from prototypical customers and receiving such great feedback, I believe I can actually make this work and may start on it sooner than later.

Summarize: This exercise was awesome it helped me really tap into my daily thoughts and ideas I always conjure up, but actually act on them and break it down. It also helped me plan accordingly in my head the possibilities that can be done with this idea and the potential it has.

3A – Your Entrepreneurship Story

The easiest example I can use for this assignment is my sister's fiancé's Esports organization. His name is steve and he has started a new Esports organization called Lividity Gaming. As we all know the Esports industry is rapidly rising, the MLG (Major League Gaming) has registered qualified organizations that have teams that are considered professionals at what they do, game. He would like to work his organization to that status at the baby stages of the Esports industry. I had the pleasure of working for him as head Talent Scout, I headed the organization's scouting department and had to negotiate contracts and scout free agents via streaming platforms and tournaments in NYC. I wrote extensive reports on individuals I thought had the talent to bring attraction to the organization and value for tournaments in an effort to generate player revenue through our commission on contracts and endorsement deals. I have seen what this guy does for the good of the business and it amazes me how much social media focus there is when starting a business and looking for attraction. Times have changed and a lot of his money and time goes into ad creation and exposure to get the company out and about on the web.

I hope to get the proper guidance of what it takes to start your own business, as I would love to open up my own talent agency one day, and would love to know the steps, and guidance for preparation when doing so.

Why: You can barely leave the house, it's like a ghost town, the complete opposite of what my home usually is.

5. Not being able to renew my license due to Covid-19 is irritating.
Why: I just want it to get done before returning to school and it keeps being pushed back.

6. When it's still cold in may
Why: Because it is late may and should be at least warmer and sunny. I hate cold weather. \

7. Not a lot of simple work to do during the stay at home lockdown.
Why: I want to make some money for the school year.

8. When someone puts an empty bottle of ketchup back in the fridge.
Why: Because it's usually my sister, and what is the point.

14. The MLBPA wanting full pay for half a season.
Why: Many people are taking pay cuts right now due to the pandemic, and many more are unemployed, you get paid for your work half your work isn't worth a full salary, quit being greedy I want to watch baseball.

15. The back and forth of when stay at home order will be lifted.
Why: Stop giving me hope and ripping it away from me so quickly, I can't take this back and forth.

16. When someone says they "don't care what to get to eat", then say no to everything suggested.
Why: If "you don't care", you're willing to eat anything at the moment.

17. People not looking and just walking across the street expecting everything to stop for them on a dime.
Why: I'm used to people just walking where they please, but not being aware of your surroundings is something that bugs me.

18. Slow services.
Why: I've grown up only knowing things being done double-time speeds.

19. Letting cars go ahead of you when you have the right of way.
Why: This happens often in Gainesville, and I think it just disrupts traffic and makes everything not flow and is ridiculous and inconsiderate of traffic flow.

20. People scratching their teeth with their forks while eating.
Why: That noise is like nails on a chalkboard and makes me get the chills.

I did not find it difficult to write things that bug me, especially because I have a ton of things that currently bug me and it is all I think about and all I deal with at the moment. I'm sure everyone has this problem right now too.
